Although most known as a physical workout in western cultures, Yoga is a profoundly healing practice for both mind and body. Recent research studies have found yoga to be effective at reducing anxiety, depression, and stress. As a therapist, I describe yoga as a practice that models and promotes the application of valuable therapeutic skills, including self-awareness, introspection, mindfulness and tolerance. However, just like therapy, there are different types of yoga classes designed to promote different results (muscle tone versus mental tone). As a licensed clinician, who has been teaching yoga for over ten years, I integrate psychological skills and teachings within the yoga practice to promote an embodied experience.
